How to find happiness and independence

EP: 85 Be Crazy Well

In this episode of Be Crazy Well, Suzi is at the Craft Boxing Gym having a pow wow with several of the members about unconventional paths to healing such as combining physical activity with talk therapy to help with emotional healing. The group discusses how feelings can be better managed during intense workouts and how family dynamics influence our emotional expressions. Suzi gives the group insight into how to navigate through the delicate balance of personal happiness and independence and the importance of focusing on personal goals.

Suzi talks about the Big T and the Little T of trauma..

Everyone goes through trauma, absolutely everybody does. And there’s big T and little T, and sometimes the little T trauma is worse than the big T. It can cause greater depression. So here’s the definition. So big T would be the obvious sexual molestation, assault, being beaten up, screamed at, poverty, racism, those kinds of things you have to deal with all the time in a very chaotic and dangerous world. Especially for children.

And little T is what I call the yabba parenting. For example: “Oh, Omar, I love your hat. That’s such a great hat, but, honey, why’d you get it?” It’s nice, but then it’s not. The minute you say but you take away the first part of the sentence, don’t say but! I’m not okay with saying something and then but. A better way is to say “I love that hat and I liked the red one on you too.” Two things can coexist.

The group touches on what happens when your happiness conflicts with somebody else’s. Happiness is subjective! What if a person who is in a relationship doesn’t make the other person happy? Well now you get to negotiate. However, if you have to negotiate to the point that you don’t get to do what you deserve to do for your purpose in your life, that’s not love….that’s being held hostage.

Wrapping up the conversation, the group ponders on the difference between being the Black Sheep of the family versus being the Scout? Just because you may be different or see a different path you must travel, does it make you a Black Sheep or a Scout? A Scout forges into the world to explore and learn to only return with this newfound knowledge? So, are you a Black Sheep or are you really a Scout?
