The Vietnam War Foundation recently interviewed Kristin Hannah, acclaimed author of The Women, to spotlight the often-overlooked contributions of female nurses during the Vietnam War. These women—over 10,000 strong—braved unimaginable conditions to care for the wounded, providing hope amidst the chaos of war.
Hannah’s novel follows Frankie, a young nurse navigating the dual challenges of war and returning to a divided America. Inspired by her own childhood memories and years of research, Hannah collaborated with Veterans, including Diane Carlson Evans of the Women’s Vietnam Memorial, to craft an authentic and moving tribute.
“These women’s sacrifices have been overshadowed for too long,” Hannah shared. “Their resilience and compassion deserve recognition.”
The Vietnam War Foundation is preserving these stories through its mission to educate and heal, including efforts to establish a museum housing Vietnam War artifacts.
Kristin Hannah’s The Women serves as both a poignant reminder and a call to honor the bravery of these unsung heroes. Their legacy inspires gratitude, reflection, and a deeper understanding of history.
