Peg Andrae – Guitars 4 Vets

Peg Andrae Guitars 4 Vets

Music has the profound ability to heal, to comfort, and to bring joy. It transcends barriers and speaks a universal language understood by all. For Veterans returning home, the transition can often be a silent struggle. But what if the strumming of guitar strings could be the sound of healing? This is the melody that Guitars 4 Vets has been composing for over a decade.

In the latest episode of Coming Home Well, we had the honor of speaking with Peg Andrae from Guitars 4 Vets, an organization dedicated to offering the healing power of music to Veterans dealing with PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, and other physical limitations. With over 138 active chapters across the United States, from Honolulu to San Juan, Guitars 4 Vets has become a national anthem of hope for our heroes.

Peg gives us an intimate look into the organization’s mission, its beginnings, and the transformative impact it has on Veterans’ lives. Through a program of ten free guitar lessons, Veterans are paired with instructors who not only teach them how to play but also how to find a sense of accomplishment and joy in the music they create. Upon graduation, each student receives a brand new acoustic guitar, ensuring the music doesn’t stop when the lessons do. But it’s not just about the chords and strums; it’s about the community, the jam sessions, and the shared experiences that build a bridge back home for many Veterans.

Peg shares touching stories of resilience and recovery. From the student who overcame memory challenges to play “Silent Night,” to the innovative instructor who crafted a makeshift slide to accommodate a student’s physical limitations – each tale strums a chord of inspiration and possibility.

Listening to this podcast episode is more than an auditory experience; it’s an invitation to witness the power of music as a catalyst for healing and connection. It’s a call to action for anyone with a love of guitar and a heart for Veterans to become part of the Guitars 4 Vets mission.

We are reminded that music is not only a refuge for the individual but a chorus that brings us together. So, tune in, be moved, and perhaps, be motivated to pick up a guitar and join the symphony of support for our Veterans.
